Minister Louis Farrakhan teaches that "self-improvement is the basis for community development." The Nation of Islam is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all, and Mosque #11 has been tirelessly working to improve the lives of the people in our local Grove Hall area of Roxbury. Some of our most significant contributions include the reduction of community violence, the Prison Reform Ministry, neighborhood development, and individual support and advocacy.

The gang violence of the eighties that plagued communities of color all over the United States was decisively and courageously attacked head-on by Boston Muslims. Security call-outs, neighborhood patrols, meetings with gang members, appeals to local leadership, and collaboration with the Boston Police Department resulted in a safer neighborhood for all. When there was a resurgence of violnce in the nineties, Mosque#11 stepped up its efforts, and is largely credited for the subsequent rapid decrease of crime, now known as "The Boston Miracle."

The NOI Prison Reform Ministry has been the most visible ministry to affect change in prisons around the country, particularly in the Boston area. Many lives have been saved and families united; formerly imprisoned men have testified to full rehabilitation thanks to the Nation. Boston's Prison Reform Ministry is one of the country's most successful, reaching hundreds of prisoners each week at Walpole, Framingham, South Bay, Fort Devens, Bridgewater State, Norfolk, and Gardener.
